Facing Life With A Smile

One of the things I absolutely love about Congolese culture is that there is no bad time to sing, dance, and enjoy yourself!

Everywhere I visit in the DRC, I am always a witness to songs and dance, both spontaneous and planned. Of course there are the normal weddings, church services, and parties that are always full of joyful dancing, and I was somewhat expecting this. What surprised me was the singing in the work place, in the hospital, the laughing and dancing in the markets, and the seemingly endless energy devoted to joy-filled expressions!

Congolese are resilient. It seems that the men, women and children, of all ages have come to an agreement that regardless of the good or bad parts of life happening around them, they will face everything with singing and dancing and make it a fun event!

This image was captured in the lakeside markets of Bukavu as we walked through with our @kitoko_oyo ambassador @patientbashombe. He introduced us to many of the market workers, talked with them and listened to them as they shared the ups and downs of their lives.

Markets are the heart beat of cities like Bukavu, they are full of people, energy, and noise. I love it!
