Chime – In Memory of a Lost Brother.

I met Chime while on assignment with @johndavidsonco trekking in the HIMALAYAS. Chime owns and runs a small guest house in the village of Langtang. Back in 2015, the huge earthquake that hit Nepal dislodged a massive landslide high above this small, sleepy village. With tremendous force, the landslide completely destroyed every building in the village but one, burying everything in it’s path under tons of rock and mud and devastating this peaceful community.

Langtang village has since been rebuilt barely 100 metres from the site of this landslide. The rock and ruble still lay untouched, an everyday reminder of the tragedy of that horrible day. Chime lost many friends and family, but mostly misses his brother. Not long after the earthquake he got this tattoo of his brother on his arm to be able to always carry his brother with him throughout his life.

The strength in so many of the people I meet astounds me. I don’t know how I would cope with the scale of tragedy Chime has experienced in his young life. But despite the past, Chime has one of the warmest, most contagious personalities you will meet. He is full of joy and laughter. Always joking and playful. The hospitality he shows in his guesthouse is first class and I highly recommend his “Yako” breakfast. A taco made from Yak meat wrapped in fried Tibetan bread.

If you are ever going this way, drop in at the Hotel Samsara in Langtang Village and say hello to Chime!
