Malawian Smiles

I love this smile. Meeting people like this is always the highlight of my travels. Amazing people, hard working, generous and hospitable.

In Malawi, 80% of the population works in agriculture. The cost of buying / hiring / using farming machinery in Malawi far exceeds the cost of hiring labourers to do the same work, so it is people like this who work the land – completely by hand. With little or no irrigation, the success of farms such as this, are completely at the mercy of the seasonal rains. The economy here in Malawi is heavily dependent on agriculture and most people survive on what they can grow supplemented occasionally by selling any excess that they may have to make a small income.
