Congolese Portrait

Congo: Beautiful Faces.

The mud splattered face of this boy gives testament to the hard day’s work accomplished in the clay river bed of his families brick making venture. Taught and encouraged by their father, this is one of 3 sons learning the trade of brick making in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

We had been out all day, spending hours bumping along roads and tracks to visit some small villages in Eastern Congo. I remember being tired, both mentally and physically, as we passed by this scene. But as we discussed stopping to talk with and photograph the people, the beauty of this place almost instantly re-filled my depleted energy levels.

The opportunity to photograph this amazing family working together to provide for themselves in such a raw and natural way was the reason I take photos. Almost no other images from my first trip to the Congo tell the story so deeply. In a troubled country, here was a man installing a deep work ethic in his children, teaching them a skill and trade that will benefit them both now and in the future. To watch on as he patiently worked with his sons, helping them, encouraging them, correcting them, and loving them. This is a story that gives me hope for the future of this amazing country. A narrative that counters the negativity, violence, and unrest constantly reported by mainstream media with a positive story of love and hope – brimming with the potential for change in the DRC.
