This is Thomas – Farming in Malawi

I’d like you to meet Thomas. In Malawi, where 80% of the population works in agriculture, Thomas is one of the workers. He has very little, and lives in very basic accomodation on the farm that hires him. The cost of buying / hiring / using farming machinery in Malawi far exceeds the cost of hiring labourers to do the same work, so it is people like Thomas who work the land – completley by hand. With little or no irrigation, the success of farms such as this, are completely at the mercy of the seasonal rains. The economy here in Malawi is heavily dependent on agriculture and most people survive on what they can grow supplemented occasionally by selling any excess that they may have to make a small income.
