Shepherd Life In The Caucasus

I was in Georgia on assignment with #reWoven. We were driving high in the Caucus Mountains looking for a nomadic Azeri Shepherd’s camp we had been told was in the area. As night fell we arrived at a camp to be greeted by the sounds of camp life. Shouting, dog barking, sheep, cattle. We were welcomed to the camp with a mixture of suspicion and intrigue. After a short introduction and talk of common friends from back in the village, we were invited into camp.

After copious glasses of super sweet tea, much conversation and a fabulous, lamp lit, camp meal, we were invited to stay, the head of the camp and his wife insisting we take their bed for the night. As we talked about life, work and family I managed to get some photos in the dark, lamp lit tent.

Every year these men, and some of their families, travel high in the mountains, escaping the oppressive heat in the village to find feed and water for their flocks. We talked for hours until the remaining shepherd’s had finished their 18hr work day and all filed in, tired and hungry. It was amazing to be there, to experience a part of life in these Shepherd camps and photograph them as they talked, joked and ate.The men sat and talked for a while before heading to bed to start again at sunrise the following day.
