Collecting Water in Malawi

In Malawi it is common to see people like this woman collecting water from whatever questionable source is available. Malawi suffers frequent droughts and in an economy that is heavily dependent on agriculture, water is crucial. Not only are rural livelihoods affected due to the severe impact of drought on the agricultural sector, but urban households are also vulnerable as food prices rise.

In a country where up to 4 million people do not have access to clean drinking water, water shortages combined with poor and unregulated practices surrounding the transportation and storage of drinking water make waterborne illnesses including cholera still commonplace.
